A boy, Peter Moon, gets a puppy for his birthday that has an unusually sensitive stomach. Time and time again the puppy comes through for him in tight and often frightening situations. The story is spiced with humour and shows how resourceful the boy is by using his dog's special attributes.

A quick read, following two boys and their adventures. When one of them receives a puppy for his birthday, a series of events unfold in which the dog helps him out of several jams, oddly by its frequent bouts of illness. The prose was light, observant, the characters somewhat distant, and the dialogue lightly sprinkled. I would have preferred more depth but it is a short story with limited space to do so.

What I liked?

It was a super quick read about a dog named Cookie. Cookie gets sick consistently and saves his owner. A simple premise, but it's a light version of prose that has just about the right amount of dialogue.

What I didn’t like?

The language of the book seemed like it was more geared toward younger kids, even though it seemed like it should be more toward young adults or more accurately teenagers.

Overall

It wasn’t my cup of tea, but for what it was it was entertaining. In my opinion, it was more “thirsty.” It wanted to be something different than it ultimately was.
Peter Moon comes down with the stomach flu just before his 11th birthday party; not that it matters, though, since he’s a bit upset that his mother doesn’t want to buy him the only gift he’s ever wanted - a puppy. However, his mother and best friend (with the most awesomest name in the world), Tiger Moss, surprise him by beckoning him downstairs from his room and handing him a puppy, a fluffy white Maltese terrier, that Peter names Cookie, since his attempts to feed the puppy birthday cake and animal cracker cookies seems to make Cookie nauseously ill.

But it doesn’t end there - whenever Peter is under or near any threat of danger of any kind, like Tiger offering him to smoke cigarettes, a fire at the hospital where Peter’s mother works, a kiss from Tiger’s amorous sister, or a mysterious man that seems to be following he and his dog around from place to place, Cookie comes to the rescue, sniffs out what’s going on, and, well, tosses cookies in order to get people’s attention, damage the cigarettes being offered, gross people out, slip up the bad guy, save the day, and be considered a canine hero by Peter’s local TV news.

Despite this, Cookie has a faithful, nurturing, almost therapeutic nature and almost always seems to be around when Peter needs him. The author, Greg Bauder, offers a very formal, observational and non-fanciful storytelling style. Just dial back on the dog tossing cookies, okay? I have a sensitive stomach.
Aimed at teens, Woofed Cookies reads more like it's geared towards small kids. The writing style is super-simplistic.

True to its name, Woofed Cookies is about a dog named Cookie that saves its owner by vomiting everywhere. Alright. That's...unique. Young Peter manages to get himself into sticky situations. Of course, little Cookie comes to his rescue each time. The relationship between dog and owner was cute.

Structure was off. Paragraphs needed better breaks between subjects. Instead, they were all lumped together in one long-winded piece of exposition. Some editing should take care of the grammar and punctuation issues. Characterization was alright. They were all straight-forward and easy to identify without much problem.

The story itself progresses along in a believable, logical manner. All the way until the end. I have so many issues with the last "problem" that Peter encounters. To me it feels like a bad plot hole in a horror movie that makes the reader roll with it. Another route would have definitely been preferable.

This could be a cute book for little kids. It demonstrates that something considered a hindrance (vomiting) can still be useful. Not everyone's disability keeps them down. So, the positive message was there, the execution needs some work.
A little vomit can go a long way.

Peter acted exactly how I’d expected a boy in his early teens to act. Everything from his obsession with getting a pet dog to how annoyed he was when his mom asked him to do chores was spot-on. He was silly at times, too. Watching him bounce through all of those moods gave me a very clear image of what kind of person he was in so many different ways.

This story told the audience what was going on instead of showing us what was happening in them. It would have been helpful to have more detailed descriptions of Peter’s adventures with his dog. They got into all kinds of mischief together, but I had trouble picturing what was happening to them because everything happened quickly and with so little time spent describing what it would be like to actually be part of those scenes.

The dialogue was nicely written. I liked the fact that every single character had such a unique way of speaking. No two people in this book sounded alike, and that made their conversations a lot of fun to read. It was easy to pick out who was talking when a new scene began, and it was also easy to make good guesses about the kinds of things they’d say once I got to know them better.

I struggled when it came to picking the right age recommendation for this tale. Some of the trouble Peter got into sounded like stuff a much younger boy would do, but there were also some scenes where he experimented with certain things that are much more common for teenagers to try. Fourteen seemed like a good compromise between the mature content in those scenes and the goofiness of the rest of the storyline.

Woofed Cookies should be read by anyone who has ever been surprised by what their pet is willing to eat.
